About the Author

Authored by the magnificent scholar Imam Abu al-Fida' 'Imad al-Din Ibn Kathir al-Dimashqi, popularly known as Imam Ibn Kathir, who is predominantly celebrated for his magnum opuses – a complete Qur’anic exegesis and a prophetic biography.  This is a short but valuable text that elucidates one of the more controversial issues related to the people of Tasawwuf, and more specifically to the people of unveiling. Although many of the Imams and people of lofty status, whom no one could accuse of lying, have reported seeing the Prophet ﷺ in a wakeful state, the issue remains problematic for some Scholars, among both the supporters and the critics of the Sufis. 

Imam al-Suyuti argues that such a vision is not only possible, but that there are many well-documented examples of such visions, both  in the time of the Sahabah (radhi Allahu 'anhum ajma'in) and afterwards. The Imam begins with texts that are irrefutable, from the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, which establish the explicit possibility of the occurrence of such visions. Al-Suyuti then presents sound anecdotal evidence that such encounters have occurred in the past, mentioning stories from the Companions (radhi Allahu 'anhum ajma'in) and from the righteous Scholars and Imams (may Allah have mercy on them). Finally, Imam al-Suyuti concludes this short treatise by providing answers to various possible and plausible objections.

"All the Sultan's Men" is a translation of Imam al-Suyuti's text “Ma Rawahu al-Asatin fi 'Adami al-Maji'i ila al-Salatin”. As indicated by the title, it argues and establishes the blameworthy nature of scholars associating with rulers. Since the age of early Muslims when the Prophetic Khilafah ended and the era of Muslim kings and empires began, scholars have wrestled with the nature of the relationship between the ulema-class and rulers.

Some of our most illustrious Imams, such as Imam Abu Hanifah & Imam Malik, refused official appointments from rulers. Moreover, they refused to visit them in their courts. Others such as Qadi Abu Yusuf - the student of Imam Abu Hanifah - accepted official appointments. Such disparity in the way of dealing with the rulers was echoed throughout the time of the Tabi'in. Some scholars accepted appointments, while others criticized them and refused such an association.

Nonetheless, both scholar and layman require guidance on the correct measures to take in times of confusion. One may wonder, "When is it acceptable for a scholar to accept an appointment?" Or "When is it appropriate for a scholar to avoid politics altogether?" Others may ask, "Is there a middle ground between the two opinions?" Such questions require in-depth answers. Although this text is only an introduction to the subject, it provides clear guidance on what kinds of interactions with the rulers are blameworthy for scholars, and why.

Mawlānā Shāh Muḥammad ʿAbd al-ʿAlīm al-Ṣiddīqī

Mawlānā Shāh Muḥammad ʿAbd al-ʿAlīm al-Ṣiddīqī was an eminent Islamic scholar and missionary. Born in 1892 in Meerut, he completed Dars-e-Niẓāmī at sixteen and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1917. Continuing his religious studies in Makkah and Madinah, he traveled globally for nearly four decades, spreading Islam in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. His sincere approach, moral conviction, and deep piety drew thousands to Islam, revitalizing dormant communities. He confronted numerous challenges, organized educational conferences, built mosques, authored over a dozen works, and engaged in interfaith dialogue. He passed away on 22 Dhū al-Ḥijjah 1372 A.H. in Madinah.
