Just as we have litres, gallons and other containers to measure volume, the mudd and sa' were common units of measure used in the era of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

Sayyiduna Safinah رضي الله عنه narrated: "The Prophet ﷺ would perform Wudu with a Mudd, and he would perform Ghusl with a Sa." (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 56)
In modern day measurements, one mudd equates to approximately 775ml. As can be seen from the hadith above, as well as numerous very similar narrations, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform ablution with a mudd full of water.
Al-Mudd al-Nabawi allows us to see exactly how much water the Prophet ﷺ used for his wudu. We may make a habit of using this vessel of water for performing wudu ourselves, which may become a source of reward for reviving the practice of this Sunnah. The use of this vessel also helps us to not waste water, which may be an additional sources of reward.
As the mudd is a unit of measure, these vessels are not limited to ablution but can also be used for measuring things such as rice or flour. This vessel helps us to better understand the numerous Hadith that mention this measurement.
Malik narrated to us on the authority of Suhayl ibn Abi Salih, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Abu Hurayra رضي الله عنه, who reported: "When people would see the new fruits [of the harvest], they would bring them to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would take the fruit, he would supplicate, 'O Allah! Bless our fruit, bless our Medina and bless our sa'a and our mudd. O Allah! Verily Ibrahim is Your servant and Your intimate friend (khalil) and Your Prophet - and I am Your servant and Your Prophet. He supplicated to You for Mecca, and I supplicate to You for Medina with the likes of which he supplicated to You regarding Mecca, and the likes thereof along with it.' Then he would call for the youngest child he saw and give him some of that fruit." (Al-Shama'il al-Muhammadiyya 201)
