The Noble Hilya Sharif is a calligraphic design meant to remind the one who gazes on it of the blessed qualities & characteristics of the Prophet ﷺ. Originating in Ottoman times, the Hilya Sharif has historically been displayed in a prominent place in Muslim households throughout the world.

This version of the Hilya contains the following elements:

  • The basmala at the top
  • A large central disc containing the text of hadith 7 of Imam al-Tirmidhi's Al-Shama’il al-Muhammadiyya, which is a description of the Prophet ﷺ
  • Four smaller discs around the larger disc containing the names of the four rightly-guided caliphs
  • Verse 68:4 of the Qur’an, which is a description of the Prophet ﷺ
  • The remainder of the text of hadith 7 of the Shama’il at the bottom, followed by prayers and blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ

The Hilya Sharif is meant to be displayed in a place of honour, such that the one who gazes upon it will be reminded of Allah's Messenger ﷺ and inspired to send prayers and blessings upon him ﷺ frequently.

In this present time, we believe it is particularly important to revive the practice of displaying the Hilya Sharif in our homes. That’s why IGI has made a version of the Hilya Sharif available in our bookstore.

Perhaps the terrible events of recent times, related to deliberately offensive depictions of Allah’s noble Messenger ﷺ, can serve as a catalyst for Muslims across the world to revive this practice of connecting to Allah’s Messenger ﷺ through the beautiful word portrait of the Hilya Sharif.
